111 Richmond Street West, Third Floor, Toronto
TSPUG

Peter Carson, President of Envision IT, will be the featured speaker at the November 18 meeting of the Toronto SharePoint Users Group. The Toronto SharePoint Users Group (TSPUG) launched in 2006 to support the SharePoint community in southern Ontario. They meet on the third Wednesday of each month at MNP (111 Richmond West, Third Floor) in downtown Toronto. Each meeting features a catered social, Q&A, and a featured presentation. All are welcome to this free event.

Nothing turns users off faster than a website that doesn't respond well. Performance of your SharePoint site is key, whether that is your public website, company Intranet, or team sites. Whether you host SharePoint on premises or in the cloud, the same applies. With large global organizations in Office 365, it is even more important, as everyone comes to a single data centre to access their sites.

In this session, we'll give you the tools and knowledge first to understand how well your site performs, and if it is slow, how to dig in and understand what is causing that. From there we'll get into the details of what you can do to improve it, both in how you build your site, and in the case of on-premises, how you build your SharePoint farm.

Performance tuning

Topics we'll cover include:

  • Measuring individual page performance using the Developer Toolbar in IE or Chrome
  • Using Visual Studio and Azure to create load performance tests that simulate hundreds or thousands of users hitting your site
  • Understanding what impacts your page performance
  • SharePoint server page processing
  • Network latency
  • Number and size of page elements
  • Options you have to improve how you build your site
  • Navigation style - structured / term store / search / custom
  • Server web parts vs. client side development
  • Leveraging search extensively
  • Using a Content Delivery Network to improve download speed of page elements
  • Image renditions to reduce image sizes
  • Optimizing your on-premise servers
  • Caching - blob cache, site collection object cache
  • Warm-up scripts
  • SQL and SharePoint server sizing and architecture
